But the ad isn’t the story. The story is a decision Trade Republic made years earlier.

Where it started. Trade Republic launched in Germany in 2019 as a trading app with very cheap trades. Around it, a crowded race was running. N26, Revolut and Monzo all sold the same dream: a better bank in your phone. Slick app, card, current account.

The decision. Trade Republic could have joined that race. It would have been fighting well-funded giants for the same everyday account. It chose a different job instead: be the place where Europeans keep and grow their savings. Co-founder Christian Hecker has said the real competitor is the piggy bank, and called the product “a new form of savings account”.

That sounds small. It isn’t. What you call yourself decides who you’re compared with. Call yourself a broker and people compare you with other trading apps, on fees. Call yourself a savings platform and people compare you with the savings account at their bank. Huge market, sleepy competitors. And it suits the home market. Germans are savers, and a savings product speaks their language.

Then it built the proof, piece by piece.

In January 2023 it started paying interest on uninvested cash for every customer. You can check that on your next statement. In December 2023 it received a full banking licence from the ECB, which matters when you ask people to park their savings with you. In 2024 came a debit card. Along the way the products got names that all sound like saving: Savings Plans, Saveback, Child Savings Account. Today the homepage says it in plain words: start investing with just 1 €, savings plans without fees, a child savings account opened in minutes. Not one word about trading...

By November 2024 it had passed over €1 billion in interest to customers.

Then came the megaphone. By 2026 the idea was built, so Trade Republic could afford to be loud. Other trading apps hire athletes: McGregor, Tyson, Lewandowski. Trade Republic hired a film star, kept him silent, and made the campaign in-house. The closing question names the real opponent without naming a brand: your bank.

Why it worked

The campaign is only a few months old, so I can’t tell you what it delivered. This is my read of the choices.

It stopped racing. It didn’t try to be a better neobank. It picked a category it could own.

It got comfortable there and went deeper instead of wider.

Every piece says the same thing: the category, the interest, the licence, the product names, the ad.

The proof came before the fame. The star amplifies something that was already true.

My take

What I love: the realisation that you can’t win every game. Trade Republic understood it couldn’t out-neobank the neobanks, so it moved to a category where it could be the obvious choice, and really embraced it. It’s also a great product for Germans, and for Europeans in general.

What I’m less sold on: the look. Black and white, very clean, very polished. For me it reads a little cold. The product has a strong point of view, and I’d love the brand to show more of its own personality, so it feels as distinctive as the idea behind it.

AI in brand work: the logo-off test

20 minutes. Do it this week.

Copy the homepage headline and first paragraph from your site and from five competitors.

Strip every name, logo and colour reference.

Ask your AI tool to match each promise to the right company, and to say what’s different about each one.

Then ask it to rewrite every promise in the plainest words possible.

If the AI can’t tell you apart, your customers can’t either.

If your plain-words version sounds like everyone else’s... that’s your next brief.

That’s issue #1.

Next time: another fintech, another look at why it grew. If someone on your team should read this, forward it. Got a brand you want analysed? Hit reply.

Imo

Sources

Brad Pitt campaign, in-house, black room, closing question, athlete contrast, HORIZONT, 12 May 2026: link

Brad Pitt campaign and sports-star contrast, BrokerChooser, May 2026: link

Trade Republic press release, Brad Pitt campaign, 12 May 2026: link

Hecker on the piggy bank and “new form of savings account”, Silicon Canals (undated): link

Company history: 2019 launch, interest January 2023, ECB banking licence December 2023, debit card 2024, Wikipedia: link

Interest on cash for all customers, Business Wire, January 2023: link

€1bn interest passed on, Trade Republic press release, November 2024: link

Product names (Saveback), Caproasia, September 2025: link

Homepage copy: traderepublic.com
